Member Roman Wolchuk Publishes Second Volume of Memoirs

On the heels of his first volume of memoirs (Memories from Pre-War Lviv and Post-War Vienna, published in 2002), UESA Philadelphia chapter member Roman Wolchuk has achieved another personal milestone: the publishing of the second volume of his memoirs, titled Memories from Post-War Austria and Germany ("Krytyka", Kyiv, 2004; text in Ukrainian).

This second volume spans Wolchuk's experiences from 1945 to 1949, and describes fellow Ukrainians who after World War II found themselves in Austria and Germany and chose to emigrate further to the West. The book also contains an additional chapter of information on the murder of a number of Polish professors in Lviv by the Nazis in 1941, a historical event Wolchuk mentions in the first volume.

Ukrainian journalist Mykola Ryabchuk, who edited the book, describes it as containing "a shining feel for detail ... bright characters, a good sense of humor [and] erudition", as well as unique archival photographs.

He also credits Wolchuk and other diaspora writers with helping to revive the memoir genre in Ukraine, and with providing Ukrainian readers with historical context which was destroyed during Soviet times.
